Avala (Phyllanthus emblica):

  1. The Amla or "Indian gooseberry" is a tree that grows in India and the Middle East.
  2. The tree is small to medium in size, reaching 8 to 18 m in height, with a crooked trunk and spreading branches.
  3. The branchlets are glabrous or finely pubescent, 10-20 cm long, usually deciduous; the leaves are simple, subsessile and closely set along branchlets, light green, resembling pinnate leaves.
  4. The flowers are greenish-yellow.
  5. Amla wood is commonly used in firework. Amla fruit paste is a major ingredient of Chavyanprash,a popular Ayurvedic tonic.
  6. Amla is known as amritphala in Sanskrit, which literally means the fruit of heaven or nectar fruit. It is so called because it is rich in many desirable properties.
  7. The fruit is nearly spherical, light greenish yellow, quite smooth and hard on appearance, with six vertical stripes or furrows.
  8. This fruit is highly prized both for its high vitamin C content and for the precious oil, which is extracted from its seeds and pulp and used as a treatment for hair and scalp problems.
  9. Another common use of this fruit is in medicines and tonics since it is extremely rich in vitamin C. In fact, it is documented that the amla fruit, on a per kilo basis, is the world's richest source of vitamin C.
